Overall, as you can tell by the list above, it is important to bring things that are smaller in nature and that can be easily stored. Dorm rooms are small and trying to condense down what you need versus what you have space for is a difficult task. Check out this guide for some space-saving ideas about your dorm room that is sure to keep you sane and happy.

Dorm Space Saving Ideas

If you find yourself lacking room in your dorm, you do have options. One option is to loft your bed. Lofting your bed means taking your bed and using a kit (or buying a new frame) that lifts your bed higher off the ground so that you can fit more underneath. If your bed is high enough, you can even fit your desk or some sort of work area underneath.

Another option is to bunk your bed with your roommate (if you have one). This saves space and gives both parties a little more room. Of course, you should always check with your university to make sure that lofting or bunking is okay.

If you can't loft or bunk your bed, you can buy bed risers that will raise your bed up enough to give you more storage space

Here are some other space-saving techniques:

  • Get the appliances that your dorm allows
    • Coffee pots are multi-functional and can serve multiple purposes
    • They can make ramen, hot dogs, grilled cheese on the burner, oatmeal, broccoli, etc.
  • Stack shelving and storage to the ceiling to get as much storage room as possible
  • Stick your dresser in your closet to save space
  • Get a desk hutch for even more storage
  • Get multi-purpose furniture
    • Chairs, benches, ottomans, and even tables can have built-in storage
  • You can use a mattress caddy instead of a bedside table to save space
  • Utilize your door space and get door organizers that you can use for just about anything

As you can see, there are lots of space-saving ideas that you can utilize in your dorm. You can also get a storage unit for the semester or for the entire year. This way you can store your bigger items there and still keep your smaller stuff with you in your dorm.
